BROTHER> You guys have won Olympic Medal, and Sushil ji you've done it twice --- What is the secret of your success?
SUSHIL> I would say “Focus”. I maintained single minded focus on my Olympic goal. Blessings of my family and support and guidance of my coaches, family and friends made it possible.
BROTHER> How important was role of your family, teachers in your success?
SUSHIL> Brother, Family and Guruji played most significant role. Guru ji have been training me since I was in class 7th. My Guruji, Coaches have made me what I am today. My father would bring fresh milk, ghee and home-made food, traveling 30 KM so that I would become strong. My mother would wake up at 4am, just for me! I did not dare disappoint them. I truly believe that family, teachers and friends are irreplaceable people in our lives.
BROTHER> You have won an Olympic Medal --- What is the secret of your success?
YOGESHWAR> Secret? Haha… Brother, “Hard-Work” is the most important thing to achieve any goal! Olympic medal was my childhood dream. I could not have realized this dream without prayers of my family, support of my friends and guidance of my coaches.
BROTHER> How important was role of your family and teachers in your success?
YOGESHWAR> “Yogeshwar Beta, Kabhi bhi Haar mat Manana, Zindagi Main Kaise bhi Bura Daur aye, Kabhi Haar mat Manana…”.These lines are my motivation; they were said to me by my biggest inspiration, ‘My Father'. My family, Guru ji, and Trainers. It would've been impossible without them. Here I must also tell you that my friends also helped me a lot. When I was injured my friends gave me a lot of support, especially Krishan Kumar, Narendara, Narendra Punia (another Narendra), Paramjeet and Sushil Kumar.
BROTHER> If you could meet God today, what would you say to Him?
SUSHIL> I would request God to enable me to help others, to make me competent enough to solve problems of my countrymen so that I can return the blessings and love they have showered on me.
BROTHER> Referring to competition that exists at international level in sports, what qualities do you think makes a world champion? What are the qualities in champions from other countries which young Indians should learn?
SUSHIL> Brother, in wrestling, India is becoming the toughest competitor; now other countries worry how to beat the Indian wrestler. What makes a wrestling champion? Strength/power, stamina, mental focus and quick decision making.
BROTHER> You guys are youth icons, role models - What is your message to young children who want to make a career in sports?
SUSHIL> I suggest 3 rules to all children (which I also follow myself): (1) Remain focused on your goal (2) Respect your elders, teachers and parents; and (3) Work for your country.
BROTHER> What is your favorite food?
SUSHIL> Anything vegetarian and milk.
BROTHER> Favorite Films/Movies?
SUSHIL> I want to focus on my goal for now, will watch movies later… hahaha
BROTHER> Any other sports you follow?
SUSHIL> Yes, I enjoy playing basket ball, football and cricket.
BROTHER> How do you spend your day-off and/ or vacations?
SUSHIL> “O jee, Araam karlo wahi bahut hai…” Weekdays are so busy with training sessions so we don't get much time to rest.
BROTHER> If you could meet God today, what would you say to Him?
YOGESHWAR> Brother First, I would get down on my knees and would “Thank” the almighty for blessing me. I would request Him to continue showering His love so that I can perform better and better for my country. Lastly, for God to bless everyone would be my prayer.
BROTHER> Referring to competition that exists at international level in sports, what qualities do you think makes a world champion? What are the qualities in champions from other countries which young Indians should learn?
YOGESHWAR> At international level, all competitors are equally talented. The difference is all in the mind! Big heart, strong desire to win and will power is what makes the difference on that day. At times how well you are feeling on that day and luck also matters.
BROTHER> You guys are youth icons, role models - What is your message to young children who want to make a career in sports?
YOGESHWAR> Work Hard! Respect your parents, mentors and Coaches. It will help give you strong foundation and keep your feet on the ground. In life whether sport-sperson or otherwise, always aim big and follow it with strong determination.
BROTHER> What is your favorite food?
YOGESHWAR> Brother, “Khaane ka naam sun kar bhookh lag gayi… “ My favourite are: Aloo ke Parantha (Especially made by my Ma), Bhindi ki Sabzi, Bharvaa Karela.. umm... my mouth is watering!
BROTHER> Favorite Films/Movies?
YOGESHWAR> Patriotic movies motivate me but I hardly get time.
BROTHER> Any other sports you follow?
YOGESHWAR> I enjoy playing football and basket ball at times, during training.
BROTHER> Who are your favorite people?
SUSHIL> Mummy, Papa and my friends Arvind, Pravesh, Yogeshwar, Pradeep and many more…
BROTHER> Your favorite TV Show?
SUSHIL> I just need good food and my bed after training. No time for TV. |
BROTHER> Most memorable experience in life?
SUSHIL> My opponent from Kazakistan during the Beijing Olympics was a tough guy to beat and it was truly a memorable match where I made a comeback from a losing position. That was a moment to remember. God was on my side that day. However, father and mother claimed they were praying very hard. My friends say they fervently hoped I would win. So it is difficult to say who was responsible
BROTHER> When is your birthday?
SUSHIL> 26th May
BROTHER> If you were made emperor of the world, what would be the first thing you would like to do?
SUSHIL> Umm…I would make school education free for all the children of our world.
BROTHER> Last question, expectations are high, people are almost demanding a Gold Medal from you guys in next Olympics games, what would you like to say?
SUSHIL> I would request people to please pray for us, we need your blessings and good wishes. We will do our best to match up to your expectations.
BROTHER> How do you spend your day-off and/ or vacations?
YOGESHWAR> Rest! Good rest helps me prepare for the strenuous training coming ahead.
BROTHER> Who are your favorite people?
YOGESHWAR> Ma ji , Pita ji , Guru ji and my younger brother

YOGESHWAR> I enjoy light hearted comedy programmes on Television.

YOGESHWAR> Interesting question, brother… I would make corruption end everywhere and help poor people, as much as I can.
