Why not collect unused medicines for the poor and needy. Why not make a Medicine Bank? This was the epiphany of a 75 year old physically disabled Mr. Omkar Nath Sharma and he shared it with the world. Popularly known as ‘Medicine Baba', he lives in Mangla Puri, New Delhi and he has been collecting unused medicines door to door since 2008.
His is a gut wrenching story of grit and determination. Having lost his legs at the age of 10, he started out as a blood bank technician. Today, at the age of 75 years of age he travels daily by bus and foot from a slum near Dwarka to collect medicines.
A recent research by the World Health Organisation brought to light some startling facts – close to 300 million people in India have no access to medicines, which is also the highest statistics for a country in the world.
In response we have a few unsung heroes like Mr Sharma who has now started his own NGO – “Rahat-Hi-Rahat”; a medicine bank with a single mission - getting free medicines for the poor and needy. Mr Sharma collects medicines that range from a hundred bucks to a Lac rupees and then distributes them free of cost to charitable clinics, government hospitals and the less fortunate with a dire need for medical supplies. Earlier this year, Mr. Omkar Nath Sharma was awarded the prestigious Bharat Bharti's Lok-Ratna Award for his efforts. |
Mr Sharma's simple belief in karma and good deeds has won him a horde of loyalists. His biggest support group includes his family, his wife Mrs Shiela Sharma, their children Jagmohan and Seema, their son-in-law - Kaleem and a bunch of cute little grandchildren Disha, Sagar, Sahil and Shahrukh. Having been brought up with virtues that Mr Sharma exhibits, his family follows in his footsteps and are a constant source encouragement.
At the age when people relish life in the slow lane, Mr Sharma tours city, collecting medicines for the poor and needy. He is always on a look out for like minded volunteers dedicated to his cause.
He currently has three donation boxes in Delhi:
(1) Janki Devi Memorial College, Near Ganga Ram Hospital, (2) Jain Mandir, New Punjab National Bank, Shankar Road, and (3) Sanatan Dharam Mandir, Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi.
