“What... Now?!?!"
“I will do it later, my friends are waiting..."
“If I start this now, I will be stuck indoors for hours!"
“Can you help me, If this is not done, my teacher will yell!!"
“I will copy it from my friend”
Many of us can relate to this lack of enthusiasm for home work. But we all know that homework is a bridge that joins schools and parents. From the school’s perspective it is the opportunity to monitor students' independent progress. For parents it lends potential to gain a greater appreciation of education and to express positive attitudes towards their children’s achievement. Homework helps you in practicing what you have learned. It gives you an opportunity to think about what you have learned. Homework helps you prepare for the examination. And Homework is also an opportunity to know more, an extended learning on the subject. By the time we enter college, we have done about at least 10 years of home work practice. These 10 years gives student knowledge, confidence and credibility in dealing with different subjects.
Do you need motivation for doing your homework? Dont worry, you are normal. Sometimes we all need a little prodding when it comes to getting our work done. Always focus on your goal - of achieving % of marks that you want to score. Keep a learner's attitude. Dont hesitate to ask what you do not understand. Take help from parents, teachers, friends. Compete with yourself and not with others. Always double check your homework before submitting it.

Spending any time doing homework showed benefits, but the effects were greater for students who put in two to three hours a night, according to the study. Pam Sammons, a professor of education at Oxford University, said that time spent on homework reflected the influence of the school as well as children's enjoyment of study. "Better grades depend on efforts as well as your ability! It is not a crime not to know everything but it is unforgivable if we leave it at that. Today's students dont lack resource, they lack motivation.”
Can students really watch TV or listen to music while doing homework? A burning question for many parents! A British study found that watching TV while doing homework was associated with poorer quality of work and more time spent. However, simply listening to the soundtrack did not affect the quality of the work or time spent. It's assumed that it's the constant task-switching caused by looking back and forth between the screen and the work that causes the negative effect. Does this means listening to soft music is okay? Yes.
How can Parents Help in Home Work? Set a specific time and study area daily for home work. Keep it quiet and distraction-free area. Provide all supplies like paper, books, pencils stocked at home etc. Limit internet and playing activities to allow time for both homework and family activities. Monitor television viewing. Praise your child's efforts that are well done. Review your child's homework assignments. If there is any problem, discuss it with teachers.
Could there be a negative effect of homework? Over work can be a source of stress for both student and parent. Homework demands can limit the time available to spend on other beneficial activities, such as sport and community involvement. Too much homework can also lead to students losing interest in the subject, or even in learning. Thereby students can get confused with learning methods, different teaching styles and student may at times feel like cheating.
